A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
