From Acclaim to Fury: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein Document Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative reactions to the partial release of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions portray former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.

Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole

Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the redaction process.

Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections

While the former president's name and image appear in some of the materials, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater openness.

“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the law, and implied that a future Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he continued.

A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Disclosure

However, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.

The release—originating from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are entirely redacted, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces obscured.

But some are not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, enabled certain conservative voices to launch the attack.

“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely accused President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”

Former President Campaign Releases Response

Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these files for months only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.

“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement concluded.

Overall Conservative Comment Seems Muted

Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively muted after the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that preceded the legislative approval to enact a law mandating the files' publication.

Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were provided physical binders of files that included little previously unseen data.
