Exactly 30 years after the first Toy Story movie was released, establishing Pixar as a major animation studio and bringing viewers to iconic characters like Woody (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, offering a glimpse into the plot but leaving fans curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Gang

The preview reveals the young girl — who received Andy's toys when he left for college — receiving a latest toy, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. She gets her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the characters appear to consider it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer doesn't touch on is what Woody is back with his friends in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and helping giveaway items find good homes.

Surely, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him appear in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have returned with Woody. And what about Duke Caboom (the star)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

At the very least, some aspects are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (the voice actor), entrusting her in charge of the toy domain. In the teaser shows the insignia attached to her shirt.

Hopefully she is remains the driving force among the group.
