The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical biological terror, but beneath Together resides a deep examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He fears the concept of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple face the sort of issues that come with most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and fully committing to another person, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
