Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
